For quite a long time I dreamed of doing something good for my favorite site, but for several years, due to my busyness and modesty, I did not dare and did not imagine that I had something to tell. Until the idea for this essay came to me!
There is a spoiler at the end of the article video version, but its content is identical to the text, so you won’t miss anything except my “charming” voice and mediocre editing if you just read it here.

I am starting a series of articles where I will mention famous video games and series and talk about the projects with which ten successful development studios began their path to fame. With your permission, I’ll start from afar to show the full significance of the topic discussed in this video.

Throughout history, humanity has been driven forward by different needs:
• the need to satisfy hunger with the carcasses of killed mammoths;
• the need for comfort and family, which takes over some of the household responsibilities;
• the need for security so that envious neighbors do not take away their property;
• the need for self-expression, because with intelligence we began to need the meaning of life;
• the need for money, which allows us to satisfy the above.

Economics is vital in the development of civilization; it allows you not to chase mammoths, simplify your life, be confident in your own future, at least in part, and realize your ideas. With a certain amount of diligence, of course. I’m not even talking about the development of scientific and technological progress and industry, because, let’s be honest, even if all the Neanderthals stopped fighting, they still wouldn’t have built a rocket. Money solves many problems, even if it creates new ones. Now, instead of hunting, gathering, farming or herding, people have access to other types of work that take less time, usually. There is time for walks, painting, sculpture, handicrafts, music, dancing and singing, games and any other creativity. The video game industry generally takes money from those who play games and brings it to those who make games. True, advertisers, carriers, sellers and publishers also receive money from players, but their contribution, although not always creative, must also pay off. In two thousand and seventeen, revenues from the global video game industry amounted to more than one hundred billion dollars, and this year, according to some forecasts, revenues will be about almost one hundred and forty billion! Shareholders of large game publishers probably don’t believe the numbers on their accounts, but their tracks with white powder and yachts, huge exhibitions with thousands of fans and cosplayers would not have happened if humanity had not developed developers who care about the quality of their games, sophistication and excitement, and not the timing of financial quarters, market demand and budgets of advertising campaigns. Every programmer, designer or composer is a creator heading towards popular recognition. I want to tell you about the very first creations of ten development teams that have won the love of fans.

Arkane Studios

Intense stealth and dynamic action, varied plot and exciting crafting – Arkane Studios, authors Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Dishonored And Prey, know how to make good games without changing their unique style. By trying to “break” them, going beyond what is permitted, you will only expand the boundaries of your capabilities, but will not make a hole in the game mechanics at all. Arkane from their very inception, they tried to make games in the “immersive sim” genre, that is, with such a simulation of the life of fantasy worlds so that the player would be completely immersed and intuitively understand them. Arx Fatalis – direct proof of my words. This is a game in the setting of a post-apocalyptic fantasy with a rare, if not unique, spell system and excellent voice acting of the environment with the fall of rare drops of underground water, the clanging of rusty chains and the echoing steps of the protagonist. Alchemy and cooking allowed you to independently remove ingredients from your inventory and interact with them as with physical objects. There is also a subtle reference to Lord of the Rings! Eh, poor gnomes..

Of course, it would be correct to use a subsidiary company for this video, but since the division B.G.S they only release sequels Fallout And The Elder Scrolls. I decided to talk about studios known for different franchises, otherwise the article would turn into stories of many game series. Detailed worlds with long-term histories, addictive plots similar to book novels, charismatic characters with their own destinies, opinions and goals, multifaceted conflicts, atmospheric locations, deeply developed side quests, branching dialogues, systematic leveling of skills and coveted erotic scenes. But the marginalized know them for their strictly tolerant and gender-neutral protagonists, banal themes of saving fictional worlds and ridiculous facial animations.

BioWare is not only Anders and Zevran from Dragon Age, desiring to tear the main character’s fly to shreds. BioWare – this is not only their epic and tragic space opera Mass Effect about a seasoned captain of the space fleet, commander of the best spaceship of humanity, relying on loyal friends and infallible ideals, thinking outside the box and open to new ideas and peaceful dialogue. This is also a banal premise with unmotivated villains – the galaxy is threatened by merciless machines that exist only to destroy everything sentient. BioWare – this is a stereotypical beginning Knights Of The Old Republic about the main character who has lost his memory, who turns out to be the coolest retired Sith and on his word of honor the Republic will forgive him everything.

BioWare – these are the creators Baldur’s Gate And Neverwinter Nights – ideal system adaptations Dungeons & Dragons on computer platforms with all possible options for character creation and incredibly branched leveling, and at the same time the authors Anthem – a game that is completely out of their style and rules, and from the trailer footage looks not like a new word in the genre, but like a beautiful, but secondary fruit of vicious love Destiny from the studio Bungie over the stupid and unformed Mass Effect Andromeda. The original menu, the ability to improve some parts of the mech and the design of alien locations and enemies at the time the game was released in 1996 did a good job of immersing the player in the role of an unprincipled warrior, and no one asked for moral choices then.

FromSoftware

It’s time to talk about the main sadists of the gaming industry. About those who caused the breakdown of thousands of gamepads, who extracted so many veins from the fans of their creations that they could wrap the planet along the equator, and maybe several times, who spoiled more nerves than married couples have ever spoiled each other during divorces in the entire human history. In the name of their company, the word “Soft”, which literally means “soft”, acquires an exceptional concentration of sarcastic, bilious irony, and the names of the games, on the contrary, fully characterize each of their employees, because these people clearly have dark and demonic souls, but fans still continue to love and play through the corporation’s creations many times FromSoftware. Like Arkane, these guys also do not change their approaches to development Action-RPG. They know exactly how to maintain a balance between the oppressive, harsh, dark atmosphere of the game world and the unforgiving gameplay, and present the plot through notes scattered throughout the locations and rare cut scenes.

All of the above applies to the opening game as well FromSoftware – King’s Field – the history of the world will not become a revelation, dark dungeons will not seem more comfortable, and the first enemy encountered will not give his life in vain, like all subsequent ones. The first-person camera was not conducive to frequent rolling, so the protagonist could simply jump in different directions and in battle, for every step forward to attack, he took three steps back to wait out the replenishment of the stamina scale, and with a group of opponents he had to conduct long round dances of death dances. I think fans of both series – and King’s Field, And Souls – traced a clear increase in the dynamism of battles with the release of each new part. It’s nice to see that FromSoftware grow both in terms of their favorite proven mechanics and in other aspects of the games – in Bloodborne the dynamics of the battle took a new peak, and the design was literally of extraterrestrial origin. Even looking at the less original surroundings than in previous games, I have no doubt that admiring the landscapes of their upcoming project Sekiro and dashingly dodging the blows of ninjas and samurai, everything will be just as exciting for masochistic gamers.

id Software

Have you killed devils on Mars while playing Doom, killed fascist sorcerers and zombies in Wolfenstein or invaded the home planet of the Strogg over and over again, and then “bent over” all the “brakes” in the online arena Quake? If yes, then thank me id Software, They, like no one else, masterfully create interesting single-player campaigns and lightning-fast online modes. There is nothing in their games that would look alien: Doomguy’s chosenness and coolness are believed just as much as in the uncontrollable bloodthirstiness of the creatures of hell, neat stealth is not alien to Blaskowitz, as is combat rage, and arenas Quake is a symphony of dynamic battles in a conservatory of ascetic minimalism.

Think about whether these names are familiar to you: Tom Hall, John Carmack, American McGee, John Romero? They all worked in id Software! Even though life took them all in different directions, they worked together, creating hits in the gaming industry.
